Plot summary
Once, a boy named Telima Tiyl, from Winjaka, embarked on a rat-hunting expedition with some fellow lads in the sweet-potato gardens. After clubbing a fair share of rodents, they decided to kindle a fire for cooking. However, they couldn't get the fire going. It was then that Tiyl offered to fetch some embers from a fire burning nearby.
While he was gone, his companions lit a fire, prepared, and devoured all the rats, leaving nothing for Tiyl. When Tiyl returned with the embers and saw that there was nothing left for him, tears streamed down his face. He decided to run away with his loyal companion, Peant, a faithful pet dog.
They spent that night on the mountain, and the next day, they cleared a piece of land with their machetes and planted the shoots they had brought along. Peant skillfully hunted possum, sustaining them until their garden bloomed. At Kondumanda, Peant discovered a tethered sow, liberated her, and led her back to their camp. She bore a litter of sixteen piglets for them.
Peant then embarked on a quest to find a wife for Tiyl, someone who could tend to their gardens and pigs. He stumbled upon a group of young women bathing by the river who immediately sensed that he was a special dog. One of the women allowed him to spend the night in her house, and this woman became Telima Tiyl's wife. They celebrated their union with a pig feast, and love blossomed between Tiyl and his new wife, who bore him two sons.
Initially, life was harmonious, with Peant and the family getting along well. But the day came when the wife, burdened with a massive bag of sweet potatoes on her back, found Peant lounging by the fireside. Overwhelmed and irked, she kicked him away. Heartbroken, Peant decided to run away. When Tiyl returned and heard Peant's mournful howls in the distance, he realized what had happened. In his anguish, he severed his own fingers. The pigs that Tiyl and Peant had raised were left behind, only in empty half-sections. The other half of each pig resided with Peant on Mount Giluwe.
